The fjord-like bay, framed by steep mountains, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and combines the medieval old town of Kotor with picturesque coastal towns like Perast, from where boats cross to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks.

Budva's lively old town, with its Venetian city walls, forms the center of the Montenegrin Riviera, surrounded by fine sandy beaches, a vibrant nightlife and the famous photo spot of Sveti Stefan peninsula right next door.

Durmitor National Park in the north captivates with rugged peaks over 2,500 meters, crystal-clear glacial lakes and the Tara Canyon, the second-deepest canyon in the world, a paradise for hikers and rafting enthusiasts.

The tiny rocky island, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, with its red tiled roofs ranks among the most photographed places in the Balkans and today houses an exclusive luxury resort right on the sea.

Direct flights land at Tivat Airport right on the Bay of Kotor or at Podgorica Airport, both served seasonally from several European cities, with a flight time of about two hours from Zurich. Alternatively, Montenegro is reachable from Dubrovnik in Croatia in just an hour and a half by car.

The official language is Montenegrin, which is very closely related to Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian. In tourist regions along the coast, English, Italian and German are also frequently understood.

Although Montenegro is not an EU member, the euro is used as the official currency, which makes handling cash especially easy for travelers from the eurozone.

Montenegro sits in the lower-to-mid price range for Europe, cheaper than Croatia, but in tourist hotspots like Kotor or Budva in high summer it can be surprisingly expensive, while the interior remains significantly more affordable.
