Kenya's most famous safari area is the setting for the great wildebeest migration, where millions of animals move between Kenya and Tanzania. Amboseli National Park offers what may be Africa's most spectacular photo opportunities: large elephant herds against the snow-capped backdrop of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, across the border in Tanzania. The vast plains and wetlands are also home to numerous bird species and other big game.

On the Indian Ocean coast lies Diani Beach with miles of white sand, turquoise water and offshore coral reefs for snorkeling and diving. After eventful safaris in the interior, the coastal region offers perfect relaxation, combined with Swahili cuisine and a laid-back atmosphere.

Kenya Airways and several European airlines fly with one stopover from Zurich to Nairobi, with total travel time of about 10 to 13 hours. An e-visa can be conveniently applied for online in advance and should be applied for at least a few days before entry.

The official languages are Swahili and English. English is spoken consistently in tourism, safari lodges and cities, while Swahili serves as the lingua franca among the country's numerous ethnic groups.

The Kenyan shilling (KES) is the official currency. US dollars are often accepted at safari lodges and hotels, though cash in shillings is recommended for local markets and small purchases.

Overall living costs in Kenya are lower than in Switzerland, but organized safaris in the Masai Mara or Amboseli National Park can vary greatly in price depending on the lodge category, from affordable tented camps to exclusive luxury lodges.
