The island of Sal is a world-famous destination for windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to its steady trade winds. It also draws visitors with fine sandy beaches like Santa Maria and the salty Blue Eye lagoon with its intensely turquoise water.

Endless sand dunes, almost reminiscent of the Sahara, define Boa Vista. From June to October, thousands of loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs — one of West Africa's most impressive natural spectacles.

Direct flights land on the island of Sal or in Boa Vista, among others from several European airports with charter and scheduled flights. Flight time from Europe is usually around six hours.

The official language is Portuguese. Everyday life is dominated by Kabuverdianu (Creole). English, French or Italian is also often understood in tourist areas.

The Cape Verdean escudo, which is pegged to the euro. Many hotels, restaurants and resorts accept payment directly in euros.
