Designed by architect I. M. Pei, the museum ranks among the most important cultural buildings in the Gulf region and houses one of the world's most extensive collections of Islamic art spanning 14 centuries. Its spectacular setting on the Corniche with views of the Doha skyline makes a visit both an architectural and cultural highlight.

The traditional bazaar in the heart of Doha exudes oriental flair with narrow alleys, spice traders, falconry shops and countless restaurants. In the evening the souq transforms into a lively hub with shisha cafés, live music and handicrafts, while spices, textiles and traditional souvenirs fill the stalls by day.

The futuristic skyline of West Bay with its glass skyscrapers stands in fascinating contrast to the artificial island The Pearl-Qatar, which invites strolling with Mediterranean-style architecture, luxury boutiques and marinas. At night the Corniche glows with impressive lighting along the bay.

Just an hour's drive south of Doha lies the desert with the famous dunes of Khor Al Adaid, where the sea reaches deep inland. Dune-bashing tours by 4x4, camel riding and overnight stays in Bedouin camps under the starry sky are among the country's most popular excursions.

Qatar Airways flies direct from Zurich to Doha, with a flight time of about six hours. Hamad International Airport is one of the most modern airports in the world and also serves as an important hub for connecting flights to Asia, Africa and Australia. Swiss citizens receive a free visa for up to 90 days on arrival.

The official language is Arabic, but due to the high proportion of international residents and workers, English is omnipresent in Doha and is understood and spoken throughout in hotels, restaurants, taxis and on tours.

The Qatari Riyal (QAR) is pegged to the US dollar and therefore very stable. Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in Doha, from luxury hotels to souks, so cash is mainly recommended for small purchases.

Qatar is one of the more expensive destinations in the Gulf region, comparable to Dubai. Luxury hotels and upscale restaurants in Doha reach European to high-end price levels, while street food in Souq Waqif and public transport like the Doha Metro remain very affordable.
