Traditional wooden boats known as dhows, once used for pearl diving, still lie at anchor in the old fishing harbor today. The picturesque harbor with its beach promenade recalls the town's history, shaped largely by fishing.

The well-kept waterfront promenade stretches along the turquoise waters of the Gulf, inviting an easy evening stroll with green spaces, playgrounds and seating areas, while the nearby sandy beach is used for swimming and family outings during the day.

Designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, the stadium's curved roof, reminiscent of a dhow sail, was one of the venues of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and remains an architectural landmark of the city even outside of match days.

Al Wakrah lies about 15 kilometers south of Doha and is reachable from Hamad International Airport in around 20 minutes by taxi or rental car. The town also has its own Doha Metro station connecting it directly to the capital.
