The world-famous national park is the setting for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras roam the endless plains in search of fresh grazing. Africa's highest mountain attracts thousands of trekkers each year, who climb via various routes such as the Machame or Marangu route to the snow-capped summit at 5,895 meters. Even without reaching the summit, the mountain's lower regions offer impressive hikes through different climate zones.

The spice island in the Indian Ocean impresses with powder-white beaches, turquoise waters and the UNESCO-protected old town of Stone Town with its winding alleys and elaborately carved wooden doors. Spice plantation tours and excellent diving round out the island experience perfectly.

The world's largest intact volcanic crater is home to an exceptionally high density of wildlife at its base, including all of the "Big Five" in a confined area. The spectacular crater landscape with lakes, forests and savannas makes Ngorongoro one of Africa's most rewarding safari areas.

Swahili and English are the official languages. English is used consistently in tourism, by safari guides and in hotels, so travelers can communicate without difficulty.

The Tanzanian shilling (TZS) is the official currency. US dollars are also widely accepted at safari lodges and for national park fees, while cash in shillings is recommended for local markets.

Safaris in the Serengeti and climbing Kilimanjaro are among Africa's pricier travel experiences due to park fees and required guides, while Zanzibar and simple accommodations on the mainland can also be booked more affordably.
