The gigantic lock system connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and ranks among the world's most impressive engineering feats. From the Miraflores Locks visitor center, you can watch up close as huge cargo ships are raised and lowered.

The restored old town of Panama City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, blending Spanish colonial architecture with trendy rooftop bars. Right behind it rises the imposing modern skyline of the new town as an exciting contrast.

The autonomous island group of Guna Yala comprises over 300 tiny Caribbean islands with powder-white sand and palm trees. They are traditionally administered by the indigenous Guna people, who welcome visitors for boat tours and overnight stays.

This Caribbean archipelago on the border with Costa Rica is known for its relaxed island vibe, good surf waves and colorful wooden houses on stilts. Jungle, sloths and reefs are often just a short boat ride away.

Direct flights land at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City, one of Latin America's most important hubs. From Switzerland, travel usually involves a stopover in Madrid, Amsterdam or the US.

The official language is Spanish. Thanks to the long history of the Panama Canal, good English is also widely spoken in Panama City and tourist areas.

The US dollar is official legal tender and used throughout the country, alongside the local currency, the Balboa, which is pegged at the same value.

Panama City, with its modern skyscrapers, is comparable in price to Western cities, while rural regions like Bocas del Toro or San Blas are significantly cheaper and more original.
