The striking basalt mountain at the southwest tip is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a memorial to escaped slaves. At its foot lies one of the island's most beautiful lagoons, ideal for kitesurfing thanks to constant wind.

The "seven-colored earth" of Chamarel displays naturally formed sand dunes in various hues, created by volcanic mineral weathering. Nearby, the Chamarel waterfall plunges 100 meters into the depths.

The island's largest national park protects tropical rainforest with endemic plants and rare bird species such as the Mauritius kestrel. Viewpoints like Alexandra Falls offer spectacular views over the gorges.

This offshore island on the east coast is considered one of the most beautiful in the region, with powder-white sand and crystal-clear water. Boat excursions, waterfalls on the nearby river and a golf course round out the offerings.

Direct flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport near Port Louis, including with Edelweiss from Switzerland. The flight time is about eleven hours.

English is the official language, though Mauritian Creole dominates everyday life, and French is also widely spoken and understood. The multicultural population also often speaks Hindi, Tamil or Mandarin.

The Mauritian Rupee. Euros and credit cards are also frequently accepted in larger hotels, resorts and tourist shops.

Luxury resorts can be priced comparably to Western Europe, but away from them local guesthouses, street food and public buses offer significantly more affordable travel — and the multicultural cuisine is excellent and inexpensive everywhere.
