The perfectly circular, deep-blue hole off the coast is part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world and ranks among the most famous diving spots on the planet. Impressive limestone formations and stalactites at over 40 meters depth make the Great Blue Hole a unique natural wonder for experienced divers.

The ruin sites of Caracol and Xunantunich bear witness to the once-mighty Maya civilization that settled large parts of present-day Belize. Surrounded by dense jungle, the monumental pyramids and temples offer impressive insights into one of Central America's most important pre-Columbian cultures.

Over 60 percent of the country is covered in tropical rainforest, home to jaguars, tapirs and a rich variety of birdlife. Nature reserves like the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary offer hikes, cave tours and the chance to observe rare wildlife in its natural habitat.

The offshore coral islands, above all Ambergris Caye, offer powder-white beaches, relaxed golf-cart mobility and excellent snorkeling right on the barrier reef. The small island of Caye Caulker, with its motto "Go Slow," embodies Belize's laid-back Caribbean lifestyle perfectly.

There are no direct flights from Switzerland; the journey usually involves a stopover in Miami or Houston to Belize City Airport. The total travel time is about 14 to 17 hours. Swiss citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 30 days.

English is the official language, the only English-speaking country in Central America. Spanish, Kriol and Maya languages are also spoken in everyday life, making communication especially easy for travelers.

The Belize Dollar (BZD) is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed 2:1 rate. US dollars are accepted practically everywhere without issue, and credit cards are widespread in tourist areas.

Belize sits in the mid-range price-wise for Central America: diving trips to the barrier reef and accommodation on the cayes can be pricier, while simple lodges inland and local food are cheaper.
