European-influenced architecture, wide grand boulevards, the colorful port neighborhood of La Boca with its vibrant houses and passionate tango shows in traditional milongas make Buenos Aires one of South America's most vibrant and elegant metropolises — often called "the Paris of South America."

The mighty Perito Moreno Glacier audibly calves into the turquoise lake, while hikes near El Chaltén lead to the jagged granite peaks of Fitz Roy. Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, is considered the gateway to Antarctica and offers dramatic landscapes at "the end of the world."

The Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) is the most spectacular part of the huge waterfall system on the border with Brazil — walkways lead right into the roaring masses of water. As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, Iguazú ranks among the continent's most impressive natural spectacles.

At the foot of the snow-capped Andes, Argentina's famous Malbec red wine thrives on high-altitude vineyards with spectacular mountain panoramas. Tastings, bodega tours by bicycle and fine dining make Mendoza a must-visit destination for wine lovers.

Direct flights connect several European cities to Buenos Aires (Ezeiza), with a flight time of around 13 to 14 hours. From the capital, affordable domestic flights conveniently reach Patagonia in the south or the Iguazú Falls in the north.

Spanish is the official language, spoken with the characteristic Argentine accent (Rioplatense). English is somewhat understood in tourist areas, upscale hotels and larger cities such as Buenos Aires.

November to March, the South American summer, is best for Patagonia, Buenos Aires and the wine region of Mendoza. The Iguazú Falls can be visited virtually year-round thanks to the subtropical climate.

Mostly moderate to affordable: restaurants, wine and domestic travel are often inexpensive compared to Europe. Hotels in Buenos Aires, however, vary greatly in price depending on the neighborhood and season.
