Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is one of the most impressive wildlife experiences in the world: after a sometimes strenuous hike through dense montane cloud forest, visitors spend an hour in close proximity to a wild mountain gorilla family. Rwanda is considered a showcase example of successful conservation thanks to strict protection measures.

The capital, considered particularly clean and safe, surprises with modern buildings, vibrant art districts like Kimironko and the moving Kigali Genocide Memorial, which commemorates the country's history. Green hills and a growing café and restaurant scene shape today's cityscape.

The large freshwater lake on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo captivates with gentle hills, small fishing villages and calm water for swimming and kayaking. The resort towns of Gisenyi and Kibuye offer relaxed recovery after the often strenuous gorilla trekking in the mountains.

Since the 1990s, Rwanda has developed into one of the most stable and fastest-growing countries in Africa, reflected in clean cities, good infrastructure and the monthly "Umuganda" community service. Traditional dance, basket-weaving art and the warmth of Rwandans further shape the cultural experience.

Direct flights or flights with one stopover connect Zurich to Kigali, with a total travel time of about 9 to 12 hours. An e-visa can be easily applied for online in advance or purchased directly upon arrival at the airport.

The official languages are Kinyarwanda, English and French. English is increasingly used in tourism, especially by guides and at lodges, so travelers can communicate easily.

The Rwandan franc (RWF) is the official currency. In Kigali, credit cards are increasingly common, but enough cash is recommended for rural regions and the national park.

General living costs in Rwanda are low, but a gorilla trekking permit in Volcanoes National Park costs several hundred US dollars, making Rwanda trips overall pricier than other East African destinations.
