The largest of the Bay Islands sits right on the world's second-largest barrier reef and is one of the most affordable diving destinations in the Caribbean. Colourful coral gardens, turtles and dolphins make Roatán a dream destination for divers and snorkellers.

The small neighbouring island of Utila is famous for its extremely affordable dive courses and the chance to encounter whale sharks year-round. A relaxed backpacker atmosphere meets world-class dive sites right off the coast.

The Maya site of Copán is considered one of the most important artistic centres of the Maya world, known for its elaborately carved stelae and the famous Hieroglyphic Stairway. The nearby colonial town invites a relaxed stroll.

Cloud forests, roaring waterfalls and an enormous variety of bird species define this national park near La Ceiba. Hikes to the El Bejuco waterfalls or rafting on the Río Cangrejal are among the most popular activities.

Direct flights land in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula or directly on Roatán island, usually with a stopover in the USA. From Switzerland, travel typically routes via Miami, Houston or Atlanta.

The official language is Spanish. On the Bay Islands such as Roatán and Utila, English is also traditionally spoken due to their British-Caribbean history.

The Honduran lempira. On the tourist-oriented Bay Islands, US dollars are often accepted too, especially at dive shops and resorts.

Price-wise, Honduras is one of the most affordable diving and travel destinations in the Caribbean. The touristy Bay Islands are considered significantly safer than the mainland, where extra caution remains advisable in certain cities.
