Carved entirely from the reddish volcanic rock, these 12th-century churches are considered one of Africa's greatest architectural wonders. They were not built but chiseled downward directly out of the living rock.

The cross-shaped Church of Saint George is the best-known and best-preserved of the eleven churches and a true masterpiece of stonemasonry — viewed from above, its floor plan forms a perfect Greek cross.

A network of narrow passages and tunnels connects several of the churches underground and, according to tradition, symbolizes the path from Jerusalem to the Heavenly Jerusalem.

For the Ethiopian Christmas festival Genna in early January, thousands of pilgrims dressed in white robes flock to Lalibela to pray together in the rock churches — an unforgettable spiritual experience for visitors.

Ethiopian Airlines flies several times daily from Addis Ababa to Lalibela, with a flight time of about one hour. Travel by road is also possible but takes considerably longer over unpaved mountain routes.

Amharic is the dominant language in the region. Good English is usually understood in hotels and on guided church tours.

October to May during the dry season is best. In early January, Genna, the Ethiopian Christmas festival, takes place with thousands of pilgrims in the rock churches.

Shoes must be removed before entering the churches, and modest clothing is required. An entry ticket for all eleven churches is usually valid for several days, and a local guide is highly recommended.
