Phu Bai Airport is served several times a day from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is located about 15 kilometers south of the city; alternatively, night trains run along the coast.

Why was Huế the capital of Vietnam?

From 1802 to 1945, the emperors of the Nguyễn dynasty, the last Vietnamese imperial dynasty, resided here, and the moat-encircled citadel on the banks of the Perfume River still attests to the city's former imperial splendor today.

What is the Forbidden Purple City in Huế?

Built modeled on the Forbidden City in Beijing, only the emperor and his innermost entourage were once allowed to enter the inner palace complex, whose buildings were badly damaged during the Vietnam War but are being progressively restored to their original state.

Which royal tombs can you visit near Huế?

Along the Perfume River lie several magnificent tomb complexes of Vietnamese emperors such as Tự Đức and Khải Định, whose pavilions, ponds, and elaborate statues offer an impressive glimpse into the dynasty's courtly burial culture.
