Art Basel (June) is the world's largest art fair — 93,000 visitors, 300+ galleries from 40 countries, works ranging from 1,000 € to 100 million $. Kunstmuseum Basel (the world's oldest public collection, 1661!) with Holbein, Cranach, Van Gogh and Picasso. Basel has more museums per capita than any other city.

Basel Minster (11th century, Romanesque-Gothic) on a rocky plateau above the Rhine — red sandstone, colorful roof tiles, views of the tri-border area. Fondation Beyeler (Riehen, 20-min tram) is one of the best private art museums — Monet, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso in a Renzo Piano building with lake views (30 CHF). Vitra Campus (Germany, 10-min bus) for architecture fans: Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron on one site.

Train Zurich–Basel 55 min (very frequent, from 20 CHF). ICE Frankfurt–Basel 3 hrs. TGV Paris–Basel 3 hrs. Basel has 3 train stations: SBB (CH), SNCF (F) and DB (D) in the same building — unique in Europe. Basel-Mulhouse Airport on French soil, 20-min bus.

Yes — locals swim in the Rhine daily (June–September, 20–23°C). Buy a Wickelfisch (waterproof bag) for your clothes (5 CHF at Migros). The current carries you 1–2 km downstream. Entry and exit points are marked. Rheinbad St. Johann (free) with showers and loungers.
