The partially restored medieval fortress, situated on a hill above the old town, once served as the residence of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuil and offers a spectacular panoramic view from its walls over the lake and the red roofs of the old town.

Tradition holds that Ohrid once had a separate church for every day of the year, and although not all have survived, numerous Byzantine churches with valuable frescoes still shape the cityscape today, above all the Cathedral of Sv. Sofija.

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport lies about 10 kilometers south of the city and is served seasonally from several European cities. From Skopje, Ohrid is also conveniently reached by bus in about three hours.
