The striking mountain silhouette at the entrance to Mindelo's bay resembles a reclining face under certain lighting conditions and is the unofficial landmark of the island of São Vicente, clearly visible from practically any point in the city and the surrounding beaches.

The most popular city beach is just a few minutes' walk from the center and offers calm, sheltered water for swimming as well as beach bars and restaurants right on the sand, ideal for a relaxed afternoon after strolling through the old town.

Cesária Évora Airport is located on the island of São Vicente, only about 8 kilometers south of Mindelo, and is served by several connections from Lisbon as well as domestic flights from Sal and Praia. From the airport, the center can be reached by taxi in about 15 minutes.
