Dodoma has officially been Tanzania's capital since 1996, as the government wanted to take advantage of its central geographic location inland, even though many ministries and the larger economic hub of Dar es Salaam remained on the coast.

The dry, semi-arid climate around Dodoma offers surprisingly good conditions for viticulture, and several local wineries still produce Tanzania's best-known domestic wines, which can be sampled directly on site.

Unlike the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, Dodoma lies nearly at the geographic center of the country, which was meant to ease connections to all parts of the country and was a central argument for relocating the capital.

Compared to bustling Dar es Salaam, Dodoma offers a much quieter cityscape with wide streets and the striking new Bunge parliament building, reflecting the city's growing importance as a political center.

Dodoma Airport is served multiple times daily from Dar es Salaam; alternatively, long-distance buses run the route in about six to seven hours.
