The dry thorn scrub savanna of the Gran Chaco is one of the most species-rich yet least accessible wilderness areas in South America, home to jaguars, pumas and giant armadillos, and can be explored on guided safaris in its raw, untouched state.

In the 1930s, German-speaking Mennonites settled in the harsh Chaco region and, through hard work, created flourishing agricultural colonies, whose history is vividly documented in the local Jakob Unger Museum.

Despite its barren appearance, the Chaco is home to an extraordinary number of endemic animal species, including the rare Chacoan peccary, and is considered by ornithologists to be one of the best bird-watching areas on the entire continent.

Paraguay's largest national park protects a vast, largely undeveloped wilderness area near the Bolivian border, where, with a bit of luck, jaguars, anteaters and guanacos can be spotted in their natural habitat.

From Asunción, the paved Trans-Chaco Highway leads to Filadelfia in about five to six hours by car. Regular long-distance buses run several times a day between the capital and the Chaco region.
