The 19 terraced gardens on the slope of Mount Carmel surround the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb and, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rank among the holiest sites of the Bahá'í faith as well as one of Israel's most visited attractions.

Founded in the 19th century by German Templers, the colony captivates with well-kept colonial-style stone houses along Ben Gurion Boulevard, now home to cafes and restaurants with a direct view of the Bahá'í Gardens.

The Carmelite monastery Stella Maris, perched atop Mount Carmel, marks the traditional birthplace of the Carmelite Order and lies near the Cave of Elijah, where the prophet Elijah is said to have lived according to tradition.

A cable car connects the beach with the summit of Mount Carmel, offering along the way a spectacular panoramic view over Haifa Bay, the harbor and, on a clear day, all the way to the Lebanese border.

Direct flights to Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion Airport) run from several European cities, from where Haifa is reachable in about an hour by train. The smaller Haifa Airport also serves some domestic routes.
