Opened in 1928, the harbor was Ghana's first modern deep-water harbor and formed the region's economic backbone through the export of cocoa, timber and minerals; since the discovery of offshore oil fields, the city has also become an important center of the energy industry.

Built by Dutch traders in the 17th century in the twin city of Sekondi, Fort Orange ranks among Ghana's many historic coastal forts and offers a panoramic view of the bay and the busy harbor from its elevated position.

Palm-lined Busua Beach ranks among the most popular beaches in the Western Region and draws surfers from around the world with its consistent waves, while relaxed beach lodges and fishing boats on the sand lend an authentic, laid-back coastal flair.

Built entirely on stilts over Lake Tadane, the village of Nzulezu is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list and can be reached by canoe — a unique community whose residents have lived entirely on the water for centuries.

Takoradi Airport is served several times a week by domestic flights from Accra, with a flight time of about 40 minutes. Alternatively, a well-developed coastal road connects Accra and Takoradi in about four to five hours by bus or car.
