The pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure form the last surviving of the seven ancient wonders of the world and are over 4,500 years old. A visit inside the Great Pyramid leads through narrow passages to the pharaoh's former burial chamber.

The huge limestone statue with a lion's body and pharaoh's head has guarded the Giza plateau for millennia and ranks among the most enigmatic monuments of ancient Egypt. A sound-and-light show takes place here regularly in the evenings.

The vast new museum near the pyramids presents thousands of artifacts, including the complete treasure of Tutankhamun, displayed together in one place for the first time.

Just a short drive from Giza lies the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, the world's oldest pyramid built entirely of stone and the precursor to the later smooth-sided pyramid form.

Giza sits directly adjacent to Cairo and is reachable from Cairo International Airport by taxi or Uber in about 40 minutes. No separate airport is needed.

Arabic is the official language. At the pyramids and in the new museum, English is understood throughout thanks to the large number of international visitors.

October to April is best, as there is hardly any shade at the pyramids and summer heat can quickly become uncomfortable.

Tickets should be bought directly at the official counter or online, camel and horse tours should be negotiated in price beforehand, and self-appointed guides outside official providers are best politely declined.
