Question 1

How do I get to Visby?

Accepted Answer

From Stockholm, Visby Airport is served several times a day with a flight time of about 35 minutes. Alternatively, regular ferries run from the mainland port of Nynäshamn to the island of Gotland in about three hours.

Question 2

Why is the city wall of Visby so significant?

Accepted Answer

Built in the 13th century, the nearly 3.5-kilometer ring wall is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Northern Europe and was a major reason UNESCO declared the entire old town a World Heritage site in 1995.

Question 3

Why are there so many church ruins in Visby?

Accepted Answer

After the decline of the Hanseatic League and a devastating Danish conquest in 1361, many of the town's once more than ten medieval churches fell into ruin, and their romantic remains, above all St. Nicolai, still define the unique cityscape today.

Question 4

Why is Visby called the Rose City?

Accepted Answer

The numerous wild-growing rose bushes along the narrow cobblestone streets and on the old half-timbered houses give Visby a romantic flair, especially in early summer, earning the city its nickname the Rose City.
