Discover Akagera National Park 2026

After the 1994 genocide, lions and rhinos had practically disappeared from the park, but successful reintroduction programs in the 2010s mean all Big Five now live there again, making Akagera Rwanda's only Big Five park.

Unlike the mountainous rainforests in the west of the country, Akagera presents itself as classic East African savanna with acacia trees and vast grasslands, explored on classic game drives by 4x4 vehicle.

A dozen lakes, above all the large Lake Ihema, run through the park and are home to numerous hippos and crocodiles, which can be observed particularly impressively on an early morning boat safari.

Besides the Big Five, zebras, giraffes, elephants and over 500 documented bird species roam the park, making Akagera a rewarding and surprisingly uncrowded safari destination in East Africa.

From Kigali, the park's main entrance is reachable by car in about two to three hours via a well-maintained road heading east to the border with Tanzania.
