Wadi Rum Travel Guide 2026: Desert Camps, Jeep Tours, Stargazing, Costs & Tips

⚠️ Safety notice (October 2026): In March 2026, the US State Department raised Jordan to Level 3: Reconsider travel due to regional armed conflict, drone and missile threats, terrorism risks and flight disruptions. Tensions have eased since a June 2026 US–Iran memorandum, but the situation can change. Wadi Rum's tourist activities have generally continued. Check your government's current advice, and book only with registered camps and guides.

Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is a vast desert in southern Jordan of red sand, towering sandstone and granite mountains, natural arches and canyons. Protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its natural beauty and cultural heritage, including thousands of rock inscriptions and petroglyphs, Wadi Rum has been home to Bedouin tribes for centuries. It became famous through T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who passed through during the Arab Revolt, and the 1962 film about him. More recently, its Mars-like landscapes have appeared in films such as The Martian, Star Wars: Rogue One and Dune. Visitors explore by jeep, camel or on foot, sleep in Bedouin camps or "Martian domes", and enjoy some of the best stargazing in the Middle East. This Wadi Rum travel guide covers the best time to visit, top places with booking tips, where to stay, how to get there and around, costs, entry rules and practical tips.

Suggested 2-Day Wadi Rum Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in the morning, full-day jeep tour, sunset over the dunes, zarb dinner and stargazing at camp.

Day 2: Sunrise balloon flight or camel ride, then continue to Petra or Aqaba.

Bedouin Food

Try zarb, chicken and lamb with vegetables slow-cooked in an underground oven, plus mansaf, flatbread, hummus and sweet Bedouin tea with sage or cardamom coffee.

Classic Jordan Itinerary

Most visitors combine several highlights in a week: two days in Amman with day trips to Jerash and the Dead Sea, one or two days in Petra (including the Monastery hike and Petra by Night, which is ticketed separately), a night in Wadi Rum, and a few days of relaxing and snorkelling in Aqaba. The King's Highway between Amman and Petra passes Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Mujib and Kerak Castle, while the faster Desert Highway is better for long transfers. Hiring a car with a driver is popular and affordable.

Responsible Desert Travel

Wadi Rum's landscape and rock art are fragile. Stay with your guide, don't carve or touch inscriptions, take all rubbish with you, and avoid driving off established tracks. Choose camps that manage water and waste responsibly, as water is very scarce in the desert and supplies must be trucked in.

Practical Planning Notes

Many travellers arrive from Petra in the morning, spend the afternoon and night in the desert, and continue to Aqaba the next day. Book a registered camp in advance, and arrange pickup at the Wadi Rum Visitor Centre or Rum Village. Entry to the protected area costs JOD 5, included in the Jordan Pass. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water and warm layers for the night. Respect Bedouin culture: dress modestly and ask before photographing people. There's little mobile signal in parts of the desert.

The Bedouin of Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum's Bedouin communities, especially the Zalabia tribe, manage most tourism in the area, running camps, jeep tours and camel treks. Staying with a Bedouin-run camp supports local families and offers a genuine experience of desert hospitality.
