Discover Fish River Canyon

With a length of about 160 kilometers and a depth of up to 550 meters, Fish River Canyon is considered the world's second-largest canyon after the Grand Canyon, formed over millions of years by the eroding power of the Fish River.

The famous, roughly 90-kilometer Fish River Canyon Trail runs over five days along the sandy riverbed through the gorge and ranks among Africa's most demanding yet rewarding long-distance hiking trails, with hikers carrying all their own equipment.

The easily accessible main viewpoint on the canyon's northern rim offers a spectacular view into the enormous gorge and is considered one of Namibia's most impressive photo spots, especially at sunset when the rock walls turn warm shades of red and orange.

At the canyon's southern end, hot sulfur springs emerge that have long been valued by the local population and today form part of a resort with thermal pools, a well-deserved finale after the strenuous canyon hike.

From Windhoek, the canyon can be reached by rental car in about six hours via the B1 highway into the south of the country. Alternatively, a route via Keetmanshoop is possible, from where the Hobas viewpoint is reachable in about two hours.
