By total volume, the Cholula pyramid, which looks like a natural hill from the outside, is the largest structure in the world and is crowned by a colonial church that the Spanish built directly atop the ruins of the pre-Spanish temple, an impressive symbol of cultural overlay.

Mexico's national dish, a complex sauce made from over 20 ingredients including chocolate and chilies, was, according to legend, invented by nuns in a Puebla convent and can be sampled in numerous variations at traditional restaurants across the city.

From Mexico City, Puebla is conveniently reached by bus in about two hours. The city's own Hermanos Serdán Airport is also served by some domestic flights and lies just about 20 kilometers west of the city.
