The second-largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and transforms the city every February with colorful parades, traditional cumbia dances and street festivals into a multi-day spectacle.

The several-kilometer-long waterfront promenade along the Río Magdalena was extensively modernized in recent years and invites a relaxed stroll with green spaces, bike paths and restaurants overlooking Colombia's largest river.

The modern, interactive museum is dedicated to the history, music and literature of the Colombian Caribbean coast, including Nobel laureate Gabriel García Márquez, who spent part of his childhood in the region, and vividly conveys the cultural diversity of the coastal region.

Barranquilla is considered the birthplace of cumbia and numerous other Caribbean-Colombian music styles, celebrated in countless live music bars and at the annual carnival, with deeply rooted African, indigenous and Spanish influences.

Ernesto Cortissoz Airport is located about 10 kilometers south of the city and is served by several major Colombian cities as well as direct flights from Miami and Panama. From the airport, the center is reachable by taxi in about 20 minutes.
