The narrow mountain pass Gap of Dunloe between the MacGillycuddy's Reeks can be crossed on foot, by bicycle or in a traditional pony-drawn carriage called a jaunting car, surrounded by rugged rock faces and small lakes.

The nearest airport, Kerry, lies only about 15 minutes by car from Killarney. Direct train connections from Dublin or Cork also link the city in about three and a half or one and a half hours respectively.
